From Zerubbabel's children the list runs on to Anani in verse 24, so David's house still has sons and grandsons after the return from Babylon. Jewish tradition, recorded by Jarchi and repeated by Clarke, reads the name Anani as a title of the Messiah.

The descendants of Hananiah
Pelatiah and Jeshaiah are Hananiah's sons, and the next four names are families, the sons of Rephaiah, Arnan, Obadiah, and Shecaniah. The verse leaves their link to Hananiah unstated. Shecaniah's line is followed in verse 22.
