Zephaniah traces his line back four generations to Hezekiah and prophesies under Josiah, and he opens at the scale of Genesis reversed: 'I will utterly consume all things from off the face of the ground… man and beast… the birds of the heavens, and the fishes of the sea.' Then the sweep narrows to Judah: the remnant of Baal, the idol-priests, rooftop worshipers of the host of heaven, men who swear both by Jehovah and by Malcam. 'The day of Jehovah is at hand: for Jehovah hath prepared a sacrifice': the guests are the invaders. Jerusalem is searched with lamps for the complacent 'settled on their lees.' The great day is near: 'a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress' (1:15).
