Psalm 24

Psalms 24:1-2

The earth is the Lord's: The Hebrew title, which this page's text does not show, reads A Psalm of David. The claim opens as wide as it can be made, the earth and its fulness, the world and all who live in it, grounded in the next line on the founding itself, established upon the seas and the floods, the same waters Genesis names before dry land appears. Paul quotes this verse by name at 1 Cor 10:26 to settle a question about eating meat sold in the market, treating the Lord's ownership of the whole earth as a plain premise rather than an argument to be made.

Psalms 24:3-6

The question pairs with Psalm 15's Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle, the same worshiper's entrance examined from the approach rather than the dwelling, and the answer again names clean hands and a pure heart rather than ritual alone, an inward vanity and a false oath ruled out along with outward wrong. The blessing and righteousness of verse 5 are received, not earned outright, from the God of his salvation. This is the generation that seek him closes the unit naming Jacob by his own covenant name, the whole company who may rightly climb the hill, with Selah left standing as the honest unknown it is elsewhere in the book.

Psalms 24:7-8

The command addresses the gates themselves, ancient doors too low or too narrow for a king's approach commanded to lift their own heads, and the question who is this King of glory answers itself, the Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle, a warrior's title. Most of the bench sets the scene as the ark's own procession into Zion, David's own occasion for the psalm, the visible sign of the Lord's presence carried up to the gates that now must open for it. The older writers also read the entering King toward Christ's ascension, a reading of their own naming and not the historical setting the verse itself gives.

Psalms 24:9-10

The refrain returns with the same command, but the answer changes its title from a warrior's strength to the Lord of hosts, the name that carries the armies of heaven, and closes flatly, he is the King of glory, a claim stated rather than argued a second time. Repeating the whole challenge instead of only the answer is the psalm's own way of making the reader ask again before hearing again. Selah closes the psalm as it closed verse 6, marking a pause the text itself does not explain.
