Psalm 131

Psalms 131:1-2

The Hebrew title, which this page's text does not show, reads A Song of degrees of David, one of the fifteen Songs of Ascents. My heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty is a king's own confession, the eyes lifted in pride being the very organ Scripture elsewhere singles out for judgment, and David sets beside it his refusal to meddle in great matters or things too high for him. Verse 2 turns confession into picture: a soul quieted as a weaned child, no longer crying for what it once demanded, the calm of a child that has stopped needing what it cannot yet understand rather than the calm of a child that never wanted anything.

Psalms 131:3

The psalm's last verse turns David's private confession into a charge for the whole nation: Let Israel hope in the Lord from henceforth and for ever. The weaned child's quiet trust of verse 2 becomes the pattern held up for every pilgrim climbing toward the feast, a settled hope rather than a grasping one. Gill and Jamieson, Fausset and Brown both read the shift from I to Israel as deliberate, a king's own discipline offered as counsel for the people he was set over.
