Proverbs 3:1-4

My son, forget not my law opens the chapter's own appeal with the address the whole opening section uses, and length of days, and long life, and peace ties obedience to the covenant's own vocabulary of blessing rather than a private reward. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee, bind them about thy neck pairs two words, mercy and truth, that run together through the Old Testament wherever God's own character is described, and the father asks the son to wear them the way jewelry is worn, visibly and always. Write them upon the table of thine heart moves the same instruction from ornament to inscription, the heart pictured as a surface wisdom is carved into rather than a container it is merely placed in.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart is one of the book's most quoted lines and one of its plainest, an instruction with almost no interpretive difficulty attached to it, only the difficulty of doing it. Lean not unto thine own understanding sets the true opposite of trust, not doubt but self-reliance, and the bench notes that the danger named is not thinking but leaning, resting the whole weight of a decision on one's own judgment. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths widens trust from crisis moments to every ordinary way, the promise attached to the habit rather than to a single act of faith.

Proverbs 3:7-8

Be not wise in thine own eyes restates verse 5's warning against leaning on one's own understanding in its positive form, self-estimation rather than self-reliance, and fear the Lord, and depart from evil pairs the book's motto with its practical outworking, since the fear of the Lord that has no effect on conduct is not the fear this book means. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones promises the instruction a physical benefit, and the older commentators take the language as poetic for the whole body's vigor rather than a literal medical claim, wisdom pictured as good for a man in the most concrete way available to the language.

Proverbs 3:9-10

Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase names giving as an act of honour rather than obligation alone, and firstfruits ties the instruction to the law's own pattern, the first and best offered before the rest is used. So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine states the promise in the plain agricultural terms of Solomon's own audience, a farming and vine-growing people who would have felt the image directly. The bench reads the promise as proverbial wisdom rather than an unconditional guarantee, true as the ordinary pattern of God's dealing rather than a formula that admits no exception.

Proverbs 3:11-12

My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord, neither be weary of his correction is quoted at length in Hebrews 12:5-6, where the writer names it directly and reads the correction as proof of sonship rather than of rejection, a chain that runs back through Job 5:17 as well. For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth, even as a father the son in whom he delighteth grounds the discipline in love rather than anger, the same father-son picture that has framed the whole chapter's address. The two dangers named, despising and growing weary, cover the two wrong responses to correction, to shrug it off and to be crushed by it, and the verse asks for neither.

Proverbs 3:13-15

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding opens a hymn to wisdom in miniature, the kind of praise the book gives at greater length in chapter 8. The merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold prices wisdom against the two most stable forms of ancient wealth, and rubies pushes the comparison further still, a value the text states cannot be matched by anything the son might desire instead. The bench notes that this is not a claim wisdom has no cost, since the son is repeatedly told to buy her, but that whatever she costs she is worth more.

Proverbs 3:16-18

Length of days is in her right hand, and in her left hand riches and honour personifies wisdom as a giver holding gifts in both hands, an image the book will develop into a full speaking figure in chapters 8 and 9. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace answers any suspicion that wisdom means a hard or joyless life, the road itself is named pleasant rather than merely useful. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her reaches back to the garden's own tree, the one image in Proverbs that names wisdom with Eden's own vocabulary, and happy is every one that retaineth her closes the hymn on the same note it opened with.

Proverbs 3:19-20

The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth, by understanding hath he established the heavens moves wisdom from a quality a man may gain to the very instrument of creation, and the language anticipates chapter 8's much longer picture of wisdom present when the Lord prepared the heavens and set a compass upon the deep. By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew keeps the same creation vocabulary, depths and clouds, that chapter 8 will use again. The bench reads the two passages as one poem in two settings, a short statement here and its full expansion later in the book.

Proverbs 3:21-26

My son, let not them depart from thine eyes returns the chapter from the creation poem back to the father's direct address, sound wisdom and discretion named as the things to keep in view. Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble promises the ordinary security of daily movement, and when thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid extends the same promise into sleep, the picture of a man untroubled even in the hours he cannot watch himself. For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken names the ground of that security plainly, not the son's own caution but the Lord's own keeping.

Proverbs 3:27-30

Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it turns the chapter outward from inward trust to a neighbor's plain claim on a man who is able to help him. Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again names the specific excuse the verse forbids, delay dressed up as a future kindness when the means to help are already at hand. Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee and strive not with a man without cause both root the ethic in the same fact, a neighbor's trust in his own safety among his own people, which the son is told never to exploit.

Proverbs 3:31-32

Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways warns against the oldest temptation wisdom literature names, that the violent and grasping man appears to prosper and so appears worth imitating. For the froward is abomination to the Lord answers the appearance directly, whatever the oppressor's present state, his standing before God is already settled. But his secret is with the righteous closes the verse on the opposite fellowship, the Lord's own intimacy given not to the successful but to the upright, a contrast the bench reads as the chapter's answer to envy before envy has fully formed.

Proverbs 3:33-35

The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked, but he blesseth the habitation of the just states the same reversal in household terms, blessing and curse both settling on a home rather than staying abstract. He giveth grace unto the lowly is quoted directly at James 4:6 and again at 1 Peter 5:5, both epistles naming the same contrast the proverb states first, God resisteth the proud but giveth grace unto the humble, wisdom literature answered word for word in the New Testament. The wise shall inherit glory, but shame shall be the promotion of fools closes the chapter on the same either-or its opening pages have kept in view since the fear of the Lord was first named.
