Proverbs 26:1-3

As snow in summer: The chapter opens a portrait gallery of the fool, eleven proverbs hung in a row, and the first three set the method: comparison. Honour on a fool is weather out of season, snow in summer and rain in harvest, wrong and damaging at once; the causeless curse flies off like the sparrow and lands nowhere. The rod for the fool's back completes a working set with the whip and the bridle, and the commentators note the grim placement: what guides a horse and an ass must correct the man who will not be guided by words.

Proverbs 26:4-5

Answer not a fool: Answer not a fool according to his folly stands directly beside answer a fool according to his folly, and the placement is deliberate: the pair is the canon's own demonstration that a proverb is situational wisdom, not a universal law. Do not descend to his manner, lest thou also be like unto him; do puncture his self-estimate, lest he be wise in his own conceit, and knowing which case is in front of you is itself the wisdom the book teaches. The rabbinic discussion took this pair up when weighing the book's consistency and resolved it the same way, a tradition the bench reports.

Proverbs 26:6-10

sendeth a message by the hand of a fool: The middle proverbs price the fool's involvement in serious business: entrust him with a message and you have cut off your own feet, honour him and you have bound the stone into the sling, where by the plain figure the stone you meant to throw stays fastened to you. A parable in the mouth of fools twice over, hanging useless as a lame man's legs, piercing the hand like the drunkard's thorn: even true words are dangerous carried by the wrong man. Verse 10's Hebrew is notoriously difficult and the versions divide; the King James gives the great God rewarding fool and transgressor alike, and the bench states the alternatives without forcing one.

Proverbs 26:11-12

As a dog returneth to his vomit: The gallery closes on its two hardest frames. The dog returning to his vomit is quoted at 2 Pet 2:22 as the true proverb, applied there to apostates who knew the way of righteousness and turned back, which is the New Testament's own exposition of the figure. Then the turn that reorders the whole chapter: seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him; after eleven verses on the fool, self-satisfied wisdom ranks below him, and the commentators mark verse 12 as the gallery's real target.

Proverbs 26:13-16

There is a lion in the way: Four proverbs on the sluggard, each a small comedy: the lion invented to keep him indoors, the door turning on its hinges as he turns on his bed, fixed to it and going nowhere, and the hand buried in the bosom that grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth. The last verse stops the laughter: the sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason, which hands him the verdict of verse 12. Laziness, the bench observes here, is finally a thinking problem, an unearned certainty that effort is for other people.

Proverbs 26:17-22

taketh a dog by the ears: The strife cluster: the passerby who meddles with a quarrel not his own has taken a dog by the ears, safe neither holding on nor letting go, and the man who deceives his neighbour and says am not I in sport is a madman scattering firebrands, arrows, and death, the joke measured by its ammunition. The talebearer proverbs give the fire its physics: where no wood is, the fire goeth out, so strife dies of starvation when no one feeds it, and the contentious man is the coal that rekindles it. Verse 22 repeats 18:8 word for word, the talebearer's words as wounds going down into the innermost parts, a doubling the collection allows and the note simply marks.

Proverbs 26:23-28

a potsherd covered with silver dross: The chapter ends on the hater who speaks fair: burning lips over a wicked heart are a potsherd covered with silver dross, cheap clay under a thin bright wash. When he speaketh fair, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart, the completeness number the book used of what the Lord hates at 6:16, here filling a flatterer. The pit-digger's proverb, whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein, with the stone returning on him that rolleth it, is the reversal figure the Psalms and Esther enact in story, and the commentators cross-reference Ps 7:15-16 and Haman's gallows by name; the chapter closes flatly, a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
