'Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and rapine.' The battle noise stacks syllable on syllable: the whip, the rattling wheels, prancing horses, bounding chariots, the charging horseman, flashing sword and glittering spear, and 'a great heap of corpses; and there is no end of the bodies.' Nineveh is arraigned as a sorceress and a harlot who sold nations, and will be publicly stripped before them. Then the historical argument: Thebes sat among the rivers with Ethiopia and Egypt for strength, and went into captivity all the same. Her fortresses are fig trees that drop their first-ripe fruit into the eater's mouth at a shake; her hurt has no assuaging.
