Bildad the Shuhite speaks first time, blunter than Eliphaz: how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a mighty wind? 'Doth God pervert justice? or doth the Almighty pervert righteousness?' (8:3). Then the cruelest sentence yet spoken to a bereaved father: if thy children sinned, he delivered them into the hand of their transgression. Bildad appeals to the former age: can the rush grow up without mire? So perish the paths of all that forget God, 'whose confidence shall break in sunder, and whose trust is a spider's web' (8:14). Yet God will not cast away a perfect man: 'he will yet fill thy mouth with laughter.'
