Run through the streets of Jerusalem and see, Jehovah says, whether one man can be found that does justly and seeks truth: the city would be pardoned for his sake. The great men have broken the yoke as thoroughly as the poor. Therefore a lion out of the forest, a wolf of the evenings. God who set the sand as the bound of the sea, which it cannot pass, is defied by a people with a revolting heart. The chapter ends with the book's sharpest verdict on religious leadership: 'the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so' (5:30-31).
