Chapter summary

The tears of the oppressed, 'and they had no comforter'.

Read the rest, the context and the outline

The tears of the oppressed, 'and they had no comforter'. So the Preacher praises the dead more than the living, and the unborn most of all. Rivalry drives labor: a striving after wind. Better a handful with quietness than both hands full with travail. Then the arithmetic of companionship: 'Two are better than one… for if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth… and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.' Better a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who will no more be admonished.

Drawn from Jamieson, Fausset & Brown, Commentary Critical and Explanatory, Matthew Henry, Complete Commentary and John Wesley, Notes on the Old Testament.
