2 Thessalonians 2:1-2

The subject is announced with the first letter's own vocabulary: the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together unto him, episunagoge, the assembling word the Lord used of his elect at Matthew 24:31 and the reality 1 Thessalonians 4 described. The trouble is a false report, arriving by claimed spirit, word, or letter as from us, that the day is already present, enesteken; the KJV's at hand understates the Greek, and the earliest witnesses read the day of the Lord. A church taught to expect deliverance feared it stood inside the wrath instead, and the chapter exists to steady it, be not soon shaken in mind.

2 Thessalonians 2:3

Two things precede that day: the falling away, he apostasia with the article, a defection the readers had been taught to expect, and the unveiling of the man of sin, the son of perdition, a title shared only with Judas at John 17:12. Apostasia is read by most as the great doctrinal revolt, while some pre-tribulational teachers have read it as the departure of the church itself; both readings are named with their holders. The man is a person to be revealed in the futurist reading this site's tradition follows, and readings that dissolve him into a bare principle carry the objection that he sits, shows himself, and is destroyed at a coming.

2 Thessalonians 2:4-5

His program is Daniel 11:36 enacted: he opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, until he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God, self-deification in the sanctuary, the line the abomination thread has run since Daniel 9:27 and the Lord's own warning at Matthew 24:15. The temple is read as a rebuilt house in Jerusalem by the futurist line and as the church by much of the Reformation line, and both readings are named with their holders. Verse 5 is the letter's reminder that none of this was new, I told you these things, spoken teaching behind the written text.

2 Thessalonians 2:6-7

Something restrains, named first as a thing, what withholdeth, then as a person, he who now letteth, and the Thessalonians knew its identity from Paul's mouth while the letter leaves it unwritten; that silence is Scripture's own and the exposition keeps it. The candidates carry their holders: the Holy Spirit resident in the church, the common pre-tribulational line; the Roman state, the fathers' usual answer, kept discreet in writing for obvious reasons; Michael the archangel; the preached gospel. Meanwhile the mystery of iniquity doth already work, lawlessness operating under cover ahead of its unveiling, until the restrainer be taken out of the way.

2 Thessalonians 2:8

The unveiling comes, and the destruction is stated in the same breath: the Lord shall consume him with the spirit of his mouth, and destroy with the brightness of his coming, Isaiah 11:4's rod of his mouth behind the phrase. The battle costs the Lord a breath and an appearing, epiphaneia of his parousia, no siege and no struggle. The Reformers read this Wicked as the papacy, an identification the exposition places as their reception history with honor and without adopting it as a verdict; the site's own posture reads a person yet to come, ended at the visible coming.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-10

The lawless one has a parousia of his own, whose coming is after the working of Satan, a deliberate counterfeit of the true arrival, attended by all power and signs and lying wonders. The wonders are lying in their service, not in their substance; the unseen world is real and the miracles are real works in a false cause, which is why they deceive. Those who perish fall not for lack of evidence but because they received not the love of the truth, a refusal of affection before it is a failure of reason.

2 Thessalonians 2:11-12

The judgment fits the crime: to those who refused the love of the truth, God shall send strong delusion, energeia planes, a working of error, the Romans 1 pattern of judicial giving-over written in eschatological ink. The moral order stands in the text's own sequence, they first believed not the truth and had pleasure in unrighteousness, and the delusion ratifies the choice already made. The verse is a warning about loves before it is a puzzle about decrees.

2 Thessalonians 2:13-14

But we are bound to give thanks turns from the doomed to the beloved of the Lord: God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation, through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth, the means bound into the choosing. From the beginning carries a variant the manuscripts split over, ap arches against aparchen, as firstfruits, and the readings on election here divide as at Ephesians 1, the Reformed and the Wesleyan lines each with their holders and no verdict stamped. The calling comes by our gospel, and its end is the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Thessalonians 2:15-17

The application of the whole chapter is a footing: stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle, paradosis here meaning the apostles' own teaching delivered while the canon was still forming. Rome has appealed to this verse for unwritten tradition and the Protestant answer has been that the apostolic content now stands written; both readings are named with their holders. The chapter that opened with shaken minds closes as a benediction, everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.
