1 John1chapter 1

1 John 1:1-2

The elder opens without a greeting, piling up verbs of sense before the sentence ever names its subject: that which was from the beginning, which we have heard, seen with our eyes, looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life. Against Cerinthus and every teacher who made the Christ a phantom or a spirit descending on a merely human Jesus, John plants the apostolic testimony on touch, the same claim his gospel makes at the resurrection appearances. The life was manifested, and we have seen it, and shew unto you that eternal life which was with the Father, the Word who was in the beginning with God now standing in the room to be handled.

1 John 1:3-4

The purpose of the apostolic report is stated plainly: that ye also may have fellowship with us, koinonia, a shared life rather than mere agreement, and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. Fellowship with the apostles and fellowship with God are named as one thing, because the church's unity runs through its grip on the same handled, heard, and seen Christ. These things write we, that your joy may be full echoes the Lord's own words at the supper, the letter's aim from its first sentence a joy that is completed rather than merely begun.

1 John 1:5

God is light: This then is the message states the letter's theme as a report received rather than a philosophy proposed, that God is light, one of the two great absolute statements the letter makes about its subject, the other coming at 4:8 and 4:16, God is love. And in him is no darkness at all rules out every shading or mixture, no dark corner in the divine nature where deception, cruelty, or moral compromise might hide. The whole ethical argument of the chapter is built on this one sentence: what fellowship with a wholly light God requires of those who claim it.

1 John 1:6-7

The first of the letter's tests runs by contradiction: if we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth, a claim of light contradicted by a life of darkness. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, the standard set by God's own nature rather than a rival's failure, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. Walking in the light does not mean sinlessness, which the next two verses rule out directly; it means an honest life open to God's light rather than hidden from it, kept clean by the blood continually, katharizei, the present tense of an ongoing cleansing.

1 John 1:8

we deceive ourselves: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us answers any reading of the light-walking just described as sinless perfection achieved. The verb is a claim about present, ongoing sinfulness of nature, not merely past acts, and the self-deceit named is a warning aimed at the spiritually mature as much as the young convert. This verse and 3:9's whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin are read together by most teachers on the strength of the tenses, 3:9's present tense naming habitual, unbroken practice rather than the occasional sins this verse assumes every believer still commits; Wesley's doctrine of Christian perfection reads the later verse toward a fuller victory, and the two positions are named here without a verdict.

1 John 1:9

faithful and just to forgive: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins answers verse 8's diagnosis with the letter's remedy, confession rather than denial or despair. Faithful and just seem an odd pairing for mercy, but the ground of forgiveness is God's own covenant word and the finished work of Christ, so that forgiving the confessing sinner is an act of justice as much as of grace, the debt already paid at the cross. To cleanse us from all unrighteousness extends the promise past pardon to a purifying that reaches every kind of sin, not merely the ones named in confession.

1 John 1:10

If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar sharpens verse 8's warning from self-deceit to an accusation against God himself, since Scripture everywhere testifies that all have sinned. His word is not in us closes the chapter where it opened, on the word, but now as a word that finds no home in the person who denies the very diagnosis it gives. The chapter's whole movement, from the Word handled in the flesh to the word refused in the heart, sets up the advocate and propitiation of 2:1-2 as the only remedy for sin honestly confessed rather than denied.
