Jehoiada strengthened himself
on 2 Chronicles 23:1-2
Chronicles opens the coup where 2 Kings 11 does, with the covenant of the captains, but the muster differs. Kings calls up the captains and the royal guard; Chronicles has Jehoiada gather the Levites out of all the cities of Judah and the chief of the fathers of Israel, the priestly order standing where the parallel account names palace troops. The Chronicler tells the same rescue as a Levitical action, guarded by the men David had already organized into courses rather than by hired soldiers.
