Psalm 56

Psalms 56:1-2

The Hebrew title, which this page's text does not show, sets the psalm in the moment the Philistines took David at Gath, the flight to Achish told at 1 Samuel 21:10 to 15, and calls it a Michtam, a secret treasure, set to a tune named the Dumb Dove far off, whose meaning the commentators discuss without settling it. Be merciful unto me, O God opens the plea, and man would swallow me up names the danger in the plainest terms David has, real enough that he feigned madness before Achish to escape it. He fighting daily oppresseth me and verse 2's mine enemies would daily swallow me up repeat the same verb twice in two verses, the constant pressure of a hunted man rather than a single attack.

Psalms 56:3-4

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee does not claim the fear is absent, only that it is met, faith named alongside fear rather than in its place. Verse 4 gives the psalm's refrain its first statement, in God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust, I will not fear what flesh can do unto me, a line the psalm repeats with small changes at verses 10 and 11. The Lord's word stands as the ground of the trust, not a feeling mastered by will alone but a promise held onto against what flesh, mere human power, can actually do.

Psalms 56:5-6

Every day they wrest my words turns from David's own fear to the enemy's method, twisting what he says rather than only attacking what he does. Verse 6 describes a coordinated watch, they gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul, the language of ambush rather than open war, fitting a fugitive hunted through Philistine and Israelite territory alike. The malice is patient and organized, which the psalm names honestly rather than treating as one outburst.

Psalms 56:7-9

Shall they escape by iniquity puts the imprecation as a question rather than a flat curse, asking whether wrong can simply go unanswered, and the site's rule for these prayers holds here too: the plea for judgment stands in Scripture as written, aimed at those actual pursuers, and is never carried by a reader onto anyone living now. Verse 8's thou tellest my wanderings, put thou my tears into thy bottle gives one of the Psalter's most tender images, grief so noticed by God that it is kept and counted rather than lost, are they not in thy book making the record formal. Verse 9 answers the earlier question with confidence rather than certainty about method, then shall mine enemies turn back, this I know, for God is for me, the whole plea resting on that last short claim.

Psalms 56:10-11

The refrain returns doubled, in God will I praise his word, in the Lord will I praise his word, the two names of God repeated over the same claim rather than treated as an escalation. Verse 11 restates verse 4 almost word for word, in God have I put my trust, I will not be afraid what man can do unto me, the psalm choosing to say the same thing twice rather than move on to something new, which is itself the point: faith under a second wave of pressure repeats its first confession instead of building a fresh one. The repetition marks the psalm's structure as much as its content, dividing it into two matched halves that each end at the same resting place.

Psalms 56:12-13

Thy vows are upon me closes the psalm the way Psalm 54 closes, a vow made in danger now due in safety, praise promised as a debt rather than offered as a spare thought. Verse 13 gives the reason in the past tense, for thou hast delivered my soul from death, the danger from Gath already behind him by the time the psalm reaches its last line. The closing question, wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living, asks for what deliverance is for, not escape alone but a life still lived in God's own sight.
