Psalms 28:1-2

The fear behind the prayer is not simply unanswered speech but silence itself, which David likens to being already counted among those gone down into the pit. Lifting hands toward the holy oracle, the innermost place of the sanctuary, is a gesture of direction rather than a claim to stand there, prayer aimed at the place where God was known to dwell. The urgency of the opening cry sets the tone for the imprecation that follows in verse 4.

Psalms 28:3-5

The wicked in view here speak peace to their neighbours while mischief sits in their hearts, a charge of hidden hypocrisy rather than open hostility. Verse 4's prayer, give them according to their deeds, render to them their desert, hands the reckoning to God rather than to David's own hand, the reading most of the older commentators give this and psalms like it. Verse 5 names the ground of their undoing plainly: they regard not the works of the Lord, so he shall destroy them and not build them up, judgment matched to the neglect that provoked it.

Psalms 28:6-7

Blessed be the Lord: The psalm turns without warning from petition to praise, the change itself a kind of evidence that David counts his prayer already heard rather than waiting to see the answer worked out. The Lord is called strength and shield in the same breath, the covenant language of a warrior's defense rather than an abstract comfort. The heart's rejoicing and the song that follows are the fitting response of one who trusted before help arrived and now sings because it did.

Psalms 28:8-9

David moves from his own deliverance to the nation's, his anointed here naming his own royal office rather than a distinct messianic title, the same Hebrew word that later crystallizes into that title as the Old Testament's hope narrows toward one king. The closing prayer asks four things for the people together, save, bless, feed and lift up, and feed carries the same root as shepherd, the image the Psalter returns to elsewhere for the Lord's care of his flock. For ever closes the psalm on the same note David opened it, a prayer that outlasts his own reign.
