Proverbs 18:1

The verse is read two ways by the bench. Most read the separated man as the self-willed man, pulling away from counsel and company to chase his own desire, breaking out against all sound wisdom in the process. Gill and others hear instead a man withdrawing from noise and company to seek wisdom itself, so the same picture of separation reads as folly or as diligence depending on what the desire is for. Both readings are held without a verdict, since the Hebrew leaves the desire unnamed.

Proverbs 18:2-5

A fool takes no delight in understanding, only in showing his own heart off, and where the wicked come, contempt and reproach follow with them as their shadow. The words of a man's mouth are deep waters, a wellspring from which a flowing brook of wisdom may run, an image the commentators read as depth requiring the hearer to draw it out rather than have it forced on him. Accepting the person of the wicked to overthrow the righteous in judgment names the corruption the chapter keeps circling back to.

Proverbs 18:6-9

A fool's lips walk straight into a quarrel, and his mouth invites the very blows it should avoid, his own destruction and his soul's snare in one line. The talebearer's words are wounds that go down into the innermost parts, an image repeated later at 26:22 that the bench reads as the book's settled verdict on gossip's real damage. The slothful worker is named brother to a great waster, since wasted effort and wasted time spend the same coin.

Proverbs 18:10-11

The name of the Lord is a strong tower: The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous running into it and finding safety, set directly against the rich man's wealth as his own strong city, a high wall in his own conceit, the pairing the bench draws deliberately across the two verses. One tower actually shelters and the other only feels like shelter, and Bridges reads the placement as the chapter's clearest contrast between real and imagined security. The wording is identical in shape, a tower matched to a wall, so the reader is meant to weigh them together.

Proverbs 18:12-14

A haughty heart goes before destruction, humility before honour, a pairing the book states more than once and here sets against answering a matter before hearing it, named folly and shame to the one who does it. A man's own spirit can sustain his infirmity, bearing him up under trouble, but a wounded spirit is asked as a question with no answer given, who can bear it, the bench reading the silence itself as the point.

Proverbs 18:15-16

The prudent heart gets knowledge and the wise ear seeks it, a pairing of inward disposition and outward attention that the commentators read as the whole of learning in one couplet. A man's gift makes room for him and brings him before great men, a plain observation about how a present opens doors, stated without either commending or condemning the practice.

Proverbs 18:17-19

He that is first in his own cause seems just, until his neighbour comes and searches him out, the chapter's warning that one side of a story always sounds complete. Casting the lot is named a way disputes are settled and the mighty parted, a practice the bench reads as an appeal past human bias to providence itself. An offended brother is harder to win than a strong city, contentions between them like the barred gates of a castle, the strongest bond made the hardest breach once it is broken.

Proverbs 18:20-21

A man is filled by the fruit of his own mouth, satisfied or starved by what he has said, and the chapter states the principle at full strength: death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love using it eat whatever fruit it bears. The commentators read the two verses as one thought, speech first pictured as food and then named outright as the difference between death and life.

Proverbs 18:22-24

Finding a wife is named a good thing and favour obtained from the Lord, set beside the poor man's entreaties against the rich man's rough answer, wealth again shown to change how a man is heard rather than what he deserves. The chapter closes on friendship: a man of many friends may come to ruin, but there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother, and the older writers hear in that closing line more than natural affection, a bond the bench names as theirs to read toward a friend who never fails.
