Job 28:1-3

Surely there is a vein for the silver opens the ancient world's fullest description of mining, and the catalogue that follows names the entire process: silver drawn from a vein, iron taken out of the earth, brass molten out of the stone. He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection pictures the miner's lamp pushing back the dark of a shaft no daylight reaches. Delitzsch reads the passage as evidence of how advanced ancient mining technology already was in the patriarchal world this book describes, and Clarke notes searcheth out all perfection as covering every corner of the working, nothing left unexamined.

Job 28:4-6

The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant pictures underground water breaking into the shaft the miner has cut, forgotten of the foot, a hazard flood control had to answer in any working mine of the ancient world. As for the earth, out of it cometh bread contrasts the surface a farmer knows with what lies beneath it, turned up as it were fire, the miner's world of forge and lamp hidden under the field's ordinary produce. The stones of it are the place of sapphires, and it hath dust of gold names the wealth the digging finds, sapphires set in the rock and gold lying loose as dust.

Job 28:7-9

There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture's eye hath not seen turns from the miner's tools to the miner's courage, a shaft driven where even the sharpest-eyed bird of prey has never looked. The lion's whelps have not trodden it names the boldest ground predator of the region as a second witness to how far this labor goes beneath anything a wild creature would risk. He putteth forth his hand upon the rock, he overturneth the mountains by the roots closes the picture with an act of raw power, moving what nothing else in creation moves.

Job 28:10-11

He cutteth out rivers among the rocks describes channels driven through stone to work the ore or carry off water the mine produces, and his eye seeth every precious thing credits the miner with a trained eye for what the untrained would pass by. He bindeth the floods from overflowing closes the mining section by returning to the hazard of verse four now mastered rather than merely survived. The thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light states the whole passage's function inside the poem, every buried thing man can reach by labor, set up against the one thing labor alone cannot reach in the verse that follows.

Job 28:12

But where shall wisdom be found, and where is the place of understanding is the sole occurrence of that exact question in Scripture and the turn on which the whole poem hangs: everything just catalogued, a mine that reaches farther than any bird or lion, still cannot locate wisdom the way it locates silver or gold. Davidson reads the shift as deliberate, moving from a place labor can map to a place labor cannot, and the rest of the chapter answers the question by elimination before the final verse answers it directly.

Job 28:13-14

Man knoweth not the price thereof, neither is it found in the land of the living answers the question of the verse before by ruling out every human market, since no living man has ever set a price on wisdom because no living man possesses it to sell. The depth saith, It is not in me, and the sea saith, It is not with me personifies the two largest spaces the ancient world knew and has each of them deny holding what the mine likewise could not hold. Barnes notes the poem building its case by elimination, every place man has searched successfully for buried treasure now speaking for itself and confessing failure.

Job 28:15-17

It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof begins the price catalogue proper, and it cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir names the ancient world's most prized source of gold as still insufficient. The precious onyx, or the sapphire join Ophir's gold in the list of what wisdom outprices, and the gold and the crystal cannot equal it extends the same refusal to a substance prized for its rarity and clarity alike. Clarke reads the catalogue's method as cumulative, each named treasure raising the bar and each one falling short in turn.

Job 28:18-19

No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies closes the middle of the catalogue by naming goods traded from the sea rather than mined from the earth, coral and pearls standing beside rubies as luxuries wisdom still exceeds. The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it reaches to the farthest source of precious stone the ancient trade routes named, a gem prized for coming from beyond Egypt's own borders. Delitzsch reads the geographic spread of the whole list, Ophir, Ethiopia and the sea together, as the poem's way of exhausting the entire known world's wealth before the question of verse twelve is finally answered.

Job 28:20-22

Whence then cometh wisdom, and where is the place of understanding repeats the question of verse twelve almost word for word, framing the whole price catalogue between two askings of the same thing. Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air extends the search past every human market into the sharpest-eyed creatures of the sky, the same birds whose eye had not seen the miner's path in verse seven. Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears personifies the world beyond life itself as having only rumor of wisdom, never possession, which Gill reads as the poem's furthest reach before it turns to God alone.

Job 28:23-27

God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof answers the question the whole chapter has been building toward: wisdom is not a hidden object to be found because it belongs to God as his own possession. For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven grounds that possession in God's own unlimited sight, the same totality the mine, the sea and the sky could none of them claim. To make the weight for the winds, and he weigheth the waters by measure, together with the decree for the rain and the way for the lightning, names wisdom as the working principle behind creation's ordinary governance, present when he prepared it, and searched it out.

Job 28:28

And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom is one of only two verses in the thirty-five chapters of human debate where the covenant name the Lord appears rather than God or the Almighty, the other falling at 12:9 in Job's own mouth. The poem's long search through mine, sea, sky and the world of the dead ends by handing man not the hidden thing itself but the right posture toward the one who holds it, and to depart from evil is understanding pairs reverence with obedience as the definition's second half. Delitzsch notes this verse standing at the head of a formula the wisdom books repeat afterward, the same fear of the Lord opening Psalm 111:10 and Proverbs 1:7 and 9:10.
