Bildad's second speech, all wrath and no counsel: how long will ye lay snares for words? Wherefore are we counted as beasts in your sight? Then twenty verses on the fate of the wicked, aimed at a man who has just buried ten children. 'Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out' (18:5); his own counsel casts him down; he is caught by heel and snare and trap; 'terrors shall make him afraid on every side.' Disease devours his skin ('the first-born of death') and he is torn from the tent he trusted and brought to 'the king of terrors.' He has neither son nor son's son among his people.
