1 Corinthians 2:1-2

Paul continues the argument begun in chapter one by describing his own preaching method at Corinth, coming not with excellency of speech or of wisdom but declaring the testimony of God plainly. He determined beforehand to know nothing among them save Jesus Christ, and him crucified, a deliberate narrowing of his message rather than a lack of learning, since the same Paul elsewhere reasons at length from Scripture and Greek poets alike. The bench reads this resolve as matching the argument of chapter one, that the cross needs no ornament to do its saving work.

1 Corinthians 2:3-5

Paul recalls arriving at Corinth in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling, likely the aftermath of a rough reception at Athens just before, and his speech and preaching came not with enticing words of man's wisdom but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power. The aim, stated in verse five, was that their faith should not stand in the wisdom of men but in the power of God, a foundation no cleverer speaker than Paul could argue away. The bench notes the Spirit's demonstration likely included signs Paul elsewhere claims for his apostleship, though the verse itself names no specific miracle, only the effect, faith resting on power rather than persuasion.

1 Corinthians 2:6-7

Paul has not abandoned wisdom itself, only the world's kind, we speak wisdom among them that are perfect, meaning the spiritually mature rather than a special elite, yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought. Verse seven names what this wisdom actually is, the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the world unto our glory, the cross planned from eternity and only now unveiled. Spurgeon preached this pairing as proof the gospel is deep enough for the mature believer's whole life without ceasing to be plain enough for the newest convert to be saved by it.

1 Corinthians 2:8

The princes of this world, read by most of the bench as the human rulers of Paul's own day rather than unseen powers, crucified the Lord of glory precisely because they did not know him, ignorance rather than superior calculation driving the greatest injustice in history. The title Lord of glory, unique in Paul's letters, sets the crucified Christ's true rank against the rulers' blindness to it. The bench notes some interpreters, reading alongside Ephesians 6:12's rulers of the darkness of this world, hear a second unseen layer behind the human one, though the text here names no such actors directly.

1 Corinthians 2:9

The next citation of the it-is-written ledger draws on Isaiah 64:4, eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him, language Isaiah used of what God does for those who wait for him. Paul applies the words to the gospel's hidden wisdom just unveiled in verse seven, things beyond the reach of human sense or imagination until God discloses them. The bench notes the verse is often misquoted as describing heaven alone, when Paul's own next verse ties it to what God has already revealed by his Spirit, in the present tense.

1 Corinthians 2:10-11

What eye and ear could not discover, God hath revealed unto us by his Spirit, since the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God, a searching that means full access rather than mere inquiry. Verse eleven argues by analogy, only the spirit of a man knows that man's own thoughts, so only the Spirit of God knows the things of God, and it is that same Spirit believers have received. The bench reads the analogy as Paul's ground for confidence that revealed truth is disclosure from the one mind capable of knowing it, not human guesswork.

1 Corinthians 2:12-13

Paul contrasts the spirit of the world with the spirit which is of God, received so that believers might know the things freely given them by God, knowledge as gift rather than achievement. Verse thirteen describes how that knowledge is taught and spoken, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth but which the Holy Ghost teacheth, comparing spiritual things with spiritual, Paul claiming Spirit-given content and Spirit-given words together. 1 Corinthians 2:14-15

The natural man, psychikos, the soul-governed person without the Spirit, receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him, and cannot know them, because they are spiritually discerned, a limitation of capacity rather than mere unwillingness. The spiritual man, pneumatikos, by contrast judgeth all things, evaluating rightly what the natural man cannot access at all, and is himself judged of no man, meaning no unspiritual critic is equipped to overturn his discernment. The bench reads this pair as the letter's clearest statement that spiritual truth requires spiritual equipment to be received, a claim that resurfaces when the letter reaches the gifts of the Spirit in chapters twelve through fourteen.

1 Corinthians 2:16

Paul closes the chapter with Isaiah 40:13, who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him, a question Isaiah asked to show no counselor advises God, and Paul answers it directly, but we have the mind of Christ. The claim is corporate and Spirit-given rather than personal genius, the same Spirit of verses ten through twelve now described as giving believers Christ's own mind toward the very truths the natural man cannot receive. The bench reads the verse as the chapter's summit, moving from Paul's plain preaching to the Spirit's revelation to this final claim that believers share, however imperfectly, in the mind of the one who was crucified in weakness and raised in power.
