4 notes on this verseHollow with boards - It seems to have been a kind of frame-work, and to have had nothing solid in the inside, and only covered with the grating at the top. This rendered it more light and portable.

Poles and rings mean the altar travels, and it is made “with boards so that it is hollow”. Exodus 20:24 and 20:25 had commanded an altar of earth or of uncut stone, and this is a frame built to be carried and filled.

Now this brazen altar was a type of Christ dying to make atonement for our sins: the wood would have been consumed by the fire from heaven if it had not been secured by the brass; nor could the human nature of Christ have borne the wrath of God if it had not been supported by a divine power.
