And next to him was Jehohanan the captain,.... Being of the same rank as to office, but having a lesser number of men under him; and it may respect not any kind of subordination, only nearness of place, as the Targum,"he that encamped next to him" and with him two hundred and fourscore thousand; which number was but 20,000 less than the former.

The roster opens with Judah's commanders: Adnah with 300,000, Jehohanan with 280,000, and Amasiah son of Zichri with 200,000, called “the volunteer for the LORD”. Gill gives two senses for that phrase. It may mean service given without pay, or, following Kimchi, gold and silver given to the temple treasury.

Gill takes next to him as a place in the camp, following the Targum's he that encamped next to him. Jehohanan held the same rank as Adnah with twenty thousand fewer men. The order may mark place alone.
