Revelation 7:1

Four angels stand at the four corners of the earth, the compass points in ancient idiom rather than a claim about the earth's shape, holding the four winds so that no wind should blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree, a restraining action that pauses the sixth seal's cosmic upheaval before the seventh seal and the trumpets it contains can proceed. The scene functions as the book's own comment on itself: judgment does not run unchecked, it waits on God's further purpose, named in the next two verses.

Revelation 7:2-3

A fifth angel ascends from the east, the direction of the sunrise and, in prophetic idiom, of glory returning to the temple in Ezekiel 43:2, holding the seal of the living God and crying to the four with power to hurt the earth and the sea, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. The seal marks ownership and protection at once, the same forehead later marked by the beast in counterfeit at 13:16, and the timing states plainly that this sealing happens before, and in order to permit, the wrath the following chapters pour out.

Revelation 7:4

The number sealed, an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel, is read by this site's futurist and anti-supersessionist posture as literal, ethnic Israel, twelve thousand from each of twelve tribes, God's own covenant people preserved through the very wrath the seals and trumpets bring rather than replaced by the church, Romans 11's root and branches standing behind the reading. The appropriation of this number by groups claiming it as a fixed count of a spiritualized elect is answered plainly by the text's own tribal, literal frame, twelve named tribes of a real nation, not a number drawn from any other body of people.

Revelation 7:5-8

The list opens with Juda rather than Reuben the firstborn, kingship given precedence over birth order just as Jacob's own blessing had done in Genesis 49, and every tribe receives an equal twelve thousand, a symmetry no census in Israel's history ever produced, marking the number as prophetic and appointed rather than a natural count. Two features stand out to every careful reader: Dan is missing from the twelve, a tribe early Jewish and patristic tradition already associated with idolatry in Judges 18 and, by some fathers, with the coming antichrist, Manasses standing in Dan's usual place; and Levi is included, though Levi held no land inheritance under Moses's division in Numbers 18:20, fitting because in this scene there is no land to divide, only sealing for a service the whole tribe of priests can share. Joseph appears by his own name rather than split into Ephraim and Manasseh as the land lists usually run, with Manasses named separately beside him, one more sign the list serves this vision's own purpose rather than repeating Numbers or Joshua by rote.

Revelation 7:9-10

After this, a second and distinct company appears, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, standing in deliberate contrast to the 144,000's precise, tribal count: where Israel is counted and named, the nations are innumerable and undifferentiated, one people drawn from every people. Clothed with white robes and palms in their hands, the palm branches of festival joy and victory as in John 12:13, they cry with one voice, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb, the same twofold object of praise chapter five's doxologies had given, salvation ascribed to Father and Son together.

Revelation 7:11-12

The angels, the elders, and the four living creatures answer the multitude's cry by falling on their faces before the throne, a posture of worship deeper than the sitting or standing seen elsewhere in the book, total prostration. Their sevenfold doxology, Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, framed by a double Amen, opens and closes the ascription the way 5:12's sevenfold praise to the Lamb had done, heaven's own liturgy answering the redeemed multitude's song before John is told who they are.

Revelation 7:13-14

An elder puts to John the very question the reader is asking, and John, rightly, defers rather than guesses, Sir, thou knowest, the seer's own posture of humility before a scene larger than his understanding. The answer names them plainly, these are they which came out of great tribulation, ek tes thlipseos tes megales, the definite article marking a specific, climactic period of distress rather than tribulation in general, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb, the paradox of blood making garments white rather than staining them, cleansing rather than defiling, the same atoning blood chapter five's new song had already named. In this site's futurist reading these are martyred or saved during the seal and trumpet judgments already opened, a company distinct from, though standing beside, the sealed of Israel.

Revelation 7:15-17

serve him day and night in his temple: Their reward answers their tribulation point for point: they serve him day and night in his temple, priestly service without the weariness the old order's priests knew, and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them, the same tabernacling promise chapter twenty-one names in full over the whole new creation, already tasted here. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more, Isaiah 49:10's promise of a returning, comforted Israel now given to this multitude, and the sun's heat that once beat on them in tribulation is named only to be denied them forever. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters, shepherd language applied to the Lamb himself, and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, Isaiah 25:8's ancient promise of the swallowing up of death, cashed here in part and cashed again in full at 21:4.
