Job answers Bildad, granting the premise and finding it unbearable: 'how can man be just with God?' (9:2). He removes mountains, shakes the earth from its place, commands the sun, stretches out the heavens, and 'maketh the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades.' He passes by and I see him not. If I wash myself with snow water, thou wilt plunge me in the ditch. The heart of Job's trouble is that his Judge is also the other party in the case: 'he is not a man, as I am… there is no umpire betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both' (9:32-33). A cry the incarnation answers.
