Elihu's third turn answers the claim that righteousness gains nothing. Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou sayest, My righteousness is more than God's? Look unto the heavens, and behold the clouds which are higher than thou: 'if thou hast sinned, what doest thou against him?… If thou be righteous, what givest thou him?' (35:6-7). Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art. Men cry out under oppression and are not answered, he says, because they cry as animals cry: 'none saith, Where is God my Maker, who giveth songs in the night' (35:10). God will not hear an empty cry.
