Eliphaz's third and last speech trades insinuation for indictment. 'Can a man be profitable unto God?': thy righteousness gains him nothing, so the trial cannot be about that: 'Is not thy wickedness great? neither is there any end to thine iniquities' (22:5). He then invents crimes to fit the sentence: pledges taken of thy brother for nought, the naked stripped, water withheld from the weary and bread from the hungry, widows sent away empty. Is not God in the height of heaven: dost thou say, How doth God know? Yet the speech ends in real gold, wrongly aimed: 'Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace' (22:21).
