'Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan': Samaria's pampered women who crush the needy and say to their lords, Bring, and let us drink. Then bitter parody of pilgrimage: 'Come to Beth-el, and transgress; to Gilgal, and multiply transgression': sacrifice every morning, tithe every three days, 'for this pleaseth you, O ye children of Israel.' Five disciplines follow, each closing with the same refrain, 'yet have ye not returned unto me, saith Jehovah': famine, drought, blight and locust, plague and sword, overthrow like Sodom: 'and ye were as a brand plucked out of the burning.' Hence the summons: 'prepare to meet thy God, O Israel' (4:12).
