The circle keeps tightening. Moab burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime: atrocity even against the dead. Judah is next, and the charge shifts from cruelty to covenant: 'they have rejected the law of Jehovah, and have not kept his statutes.' Then the trap springs on the audience itself. Israel sells 'the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes,' sleeps on garments taken in pledge beside every altar, drinks fine-money wine in the house of their God. He raised up prophets and Nazirites: 'but ye gave the Nazirites wine to drink, and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.'
