Acts 6:1-2

As the number of disciples multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, Greek speaking Jews from the diaspora set against native Aramaic speaking Jews of Judea, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Growth had outrun the apostles' own capacity to oversee the church's charity, and the complaint surfaces along the very fault line of language and background that ran through Jerusalem's Jewish population. The twelve call the whole body together and state plainly, it is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables, guarding the priority of preaching without dismissing the need.

Acts 6:3-4

The apostles ask the congregation to look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business, putting the choice itself in the people's own hands rather than dictating names. Character and spiritual fullness are named before any practical skill, since serving tables well in this church still required the Spirit's wisdom. The twelve reserve for themselves prayer and the ministry of the word, the two labors Luke has already shown carrying the church since Pentecost.

Acts 6:5-6

The saying pleased the whole multitude, and the seven men chosen, Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch, all carry Greek names, which the bench reads as the church honoring the very group whose widows had been overlooked by placing men from among them in trust. The apostles pray and lay their hands on them, the first ordination scene in Acts, setting apart by prayer and touch what the congregation had already chosen. Nicolas is further named a proselyte, a Gentile convert to Judaism before his faith in Christ, the narrowest widening of the circle before Cornelius.

Acts 6:7

The word of God increased, and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly, the first of the six growth panels that seal each section of Acts under the book's own pattern. Luke adds a detail the bench weighs carefully, a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith, penetration into the very order most invested in the temple system the apostles preached from within. The panel closes the internal crisis of verse one on a note of health rather than division, the dispute resolved feeding the growth that follows it.

Acts 6:8

Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people, moving beyond the table service he was chosen for into the same signs that had marked the apostles themselves. The bench notes that nothing in his appointment restricted him to administration, since the qualification named in verse three was spiritual fullness rather than a fixed office. His public ministry now draws the opposition the rest of the chapter will describe.

Acts 6:9-10

Opposition rises from the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, a synagogue of diaspora Jews, likely freedmen or descendants of Jews taken captive to Rome, disputing with Stephen. Saul of Tarsus, a native of Cilicia, is commonly placed by the bench among this very congregation, which would make this his first recorded encounter with the movement he will soon persecute. They were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake, defeated in open argument before they turn to other means.

Acts 6:11-12

Unable to win the argument, they suborn men to say, we have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God, the same tactic of procured false witness used against Jesus himself. The charge stirs up the people, the elders, and the scribes together, a coalition drawn from every level of Jerusalem's leadership, and Stephen is caught and brought to the council by force. The bench reads the escalation from argument to conspiracy as evidence the opposition had no answer left but violence.

Acts 6:13-14

False witnesses testify, this man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law, then sharpen the charge with a quotation, we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us. The bench weighs the charge as a distortion rather than an invention outright, since Jesus had spoken of the temple's destruction and had indeed brought a new covenant that reordered the law's ceremonial demands, truth twisted into blasphemy by omitting his meaning. The same accusation, destroy this place, had been thrown at Jesus at his own trial, the pattern repeating on his first martyr.

Acts 6:15

All that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel, a description the bench connects to Moses descending from Sinai with a shining face in Exodus thirty-four, fitting testimony to give just before Stephen's own speech recounts Moses's life at length. The council's charge accused him of speaking against Moses, and his very face now answers the charge before he opens his mouth. Chrysostom reads the radiance as the Spirit's own visible seal on a man about to be his church's first martyr.
