2 Chronicles 27:1-2

Jotham is twenty-five at his accession, the same age Kings gives him at 2 Kings 15:33, and his mother Jerushah is named as Zadok's daughter there too. He did right as his father Uzziah had done, but Chronicles adds a clause Kings does not carry: howbeit he entered not into the temple of the Lord, the very room where Uzziah's censer brought him leprosy at 26:16-19. And the people did yet corruptly is Chronicles' own honest qualifier, a good king's record that will not hide what the nation still did.

2 Chronicles 27:3-4

Kings gives Jotham's building in one clause, the higher gate of the house of the Lord at 2 Kings 15:35; Chronicles keeps that gate and adds the wall of Ophel, cities built in the mountains of Judah, and castles and towers in the forests. Ophel is the high ground between the temple mount and the Kidron valley, and the fortified cities read as continued defensive building, the same posture Uzziah kept at 26:9-10. Chronicles' fuller list matches its habit of recording what a king leaves standing, not only what battles he fought.

2 Chronicles 27:5

the king of the Ammonites: The Ammonites had already submitted to Uzziah at 26:8; here they revolt, and Jotham prevails against them, a war Kings never mentions at all. The tribute is exact: a hundred talents of silver and ten thousand measures each of wheat and barley, paid the same year and again the second and third, a scale that marks real subjugation rather than a token gift. Chronicles alone keeps this record, one more entry in its pattern of kings who prospered because they sought the Lord.

2 Chronicles 27:6

The verdict stands alone in Scripture: so Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the Lord his God, the seeking thread Chronicles has measured every king by since 1 Chr 16:11 and will measure Hezekiah by again at 31:21. Spurgeon preached this verse itself as Jotham's peculiar honor, noting that among kings who did right, few earn a sentence explaining why their reign prospered rather than simply recording that it did. The verb is not fought or built but prepared, a quieter word for a king remembered mostly for a quiet reign.

2 Chronicles 27:7-9

the rest of the acts of Jotham: The closing formula points past Chronicles itself to a fuller source, the book of the kings of Israel and Judah, one of several royal records this book names without claiming to be. Verse 8 repeats the accession notice of verse 1, twenty-five years old and sixteen years reigned, in the reversed order five and twenty, Chronicles' own way of bracketing a reign it has already summed up. Jotham sleeps with his fathers in the city of David, and the chapter closes on Ahaz his son reigning in his stead, the name that will undo nearly everything Jotham prepared.
