Better, “Hatred is covered by deceit, but in the midst of the congregation his wickedness will be made manifest,” i. e., then, in the time of need, the feigned friendship will pass into open enmity.

The chapter pictures "burning lips and a wicked heart" as "glaze covering an earthen vessel." The hater who speaks graciously hides seven abominations. The digger who falls into his own pit and the stone that rolls back are the reversal enacted at Psalm 7:15-16 and in Haman's gallows.

Hatred concealed by deception is exposed in the assembly. Albert Barnes places that exposure in the time of need, when feigned friendship turns into open enmity. Matthew Henry adds that God catches the plotter in his own cruelty, and he names Haman hanged on the gallows he prepared.
