- 1 Kings 11:40
Solomon therefore sought to kill Jeroboam. But Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt, where he remained until the death of Solomon.
Commentary on 1 Kings 11:402 voices
Sought - to kill Jeroboam - He thought by this means to prevent the punishment due to his crimes. Unto Shishak king of Egypt - This is the first time we meet with the proper name of an Egyptian king, Pharaoh being the common name for all the sovereigns of that country. Some suppose that this Shishak was the Sesostris so renowned for his wars and his conquests. But it is likely that this king lived long before Solomons time.
Adam Clarke· Commentary on the Bible, 1832Evangelical
He was a young man of talent and energy, who, having been appointed by Solomon superintendent of the engineering works projected around Jerusalem, had risen into public notice, and on being informed by a very significant act of the prophet Ahijah of the royal destiny which, by divine appointment, awaited him, his mind took a new turn.

- 1 Kings 14:25
In the fifth year of Rehoboam’s reign, Shishak king of Egypt came up and attacked Jerusalem.
Commentary on 1 Kings 14:252 voices
And it came to pass in the fifth year of King Rehoboam,.... Two years after he and his people fell into the above wicked practices: that Shishak, king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem; of whom see 1Ki 11:40, this was suffered as a chastisement from the Lord for their abominations.
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
The examination of the famous inscription of Shishak at Karnak has resulted in the proof that the expedition commemorated was directed against Palestine, and has further thrown a good deal of light on the relations of the two kingdoms at the period. Of the fifteen fenced cities fortified by Rehoboam in the early part of his reign 2Ch 11:5-12, three, Shoco, Adoraim, and Aijalon are distinctly mentioned among Shishaks conquests. Other towns of Judah or Benjamin also occur.
Albert Barnes· Notes, Explanatory and Practical, on the Old and New Testaments (1832-1869)Evangelical
- 1 Kings 14:26
He seized the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the royal palace. He took everything, including all the gold shields that Solomon had made.
Commentary on 1 Kings 14:262 voices
Secondly, it is probable David and Solomon in their building and altering the city, had more respect to state and magnificence than to its defense, as having no great cause to fear the invasion of any enemies. And it is certain, that after the division between Judah and Israel, the kings of Judah added very much to the fortifications of it.
John Wesley· Explanatory Notes upon the Old Testament, 1765Evangelical
And he took away the treasures of the house of the Lord,....
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
- 2 Chronicles 12:2–9
In the fifth year of Rehoboam’s reign, because they had been unfaithful to the LORD, Shishak king of Egypt came up and attacked Jerusalem
Commentary on 2 Chronicles 12:2–92 voices
Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem--He was the first king of the twenty-second or Bubastic Dynasty. What was the immediate cause of this invasion? Whether it was in resentment for some provocation from the king of Judah, or in pursuance of ambitious views of conquest, is not said.
Jamieson, Fausset & Brown· Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible, 1871Reformed
And it came to pass in the fifth year of Rehoboam,.... In the fourth year, the apostasy of him and his people began; and, in the year following, what is next related happened, as a punishment of it: Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem; of whom see 1Ki 11:40, because they transgressed against the Lord; transgressed the law of the Lord by falling into idolatry and other abominable evils; the Targum is,"against the Word of the Lord.''
