Lament over the burned sanctuary: 'O God, why hast thou cast us off for ever?' The enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary: axes upon the carved work, fire in the holy place, 'we see not our signs; there is no more any prophet.' The plea reaches back to creation's throne: 'God is my King of old… Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength; thou brakest the heads of leviathan; thine is the day, thine also the night.' 'Have respect unto the covenant… Arise, O God, plead thine own cause.'
