After defeat in the north while Joab smote Edom: 'O God, thou hast cast us off… thou hast made the land to tremble.' A banner is given to them that fear thee. Then God speaks in his holiness, parceling the land as its owner: Shechem, Succoth, Gilead, Manasseh; 'Ephraim is the defence of my head; Judah is my sceptre; Moab is my washpot; upon Edom will I cast my shoe.' Who will bring me into the fortified city? 'Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that will tread down our adversaries.'
