Elihu asks a little more patience: 'I have yet somewhat to say on God's behalf.' God is mighty and despiseth not any; he withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous, and if men are bound in cords of affliction he opens their ear to instruction. The chapter's thesis, that suffering can be a teacher and not only a sentence: 'he delivereth the afflicted by their affliction, and openeth their ear in oppression' (36:15). Remember to magnify his work, whereof men have sung. Then the doxology rises and his tone shifts toward the storm already gathering: 'Behold, God is great, and we know him not; the number of his years is unsearchable' (36:26).
