Eliphaz opens the second cycle with the courtesy gone: should a wise man fill himself with the east wind? Thou doest away with fear and hinderest devotion before God; thine own mouth condemneth thee. 'Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou brought forth before the hills?' (15:7). He repeats his night-vision theology as settled fact: God 'putteth no trust in his holy ones; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight'. How much less a man that drinketh iniquity like water. The rest is a portrait of the wicked travailing in pain all his days, dread sounds in his ears, his branch never green.
