Job's speech ends in a lament over mortality. 'Man, that is born of a woman, is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down' (14:1-2). His days are determined; look away from him that he may rest. There is hope of a tree (cut down, it sprouts again at the scent of water) but man lieth down and riseth not till the heavens be no more. Out of that comparison rises the great question: 'If a man die, shall he live again?' (14:14). Job answers it with waiting: all the days of his warfare, till his release come; thou shalt call, and I will answer thee.
