John the Apostle

John son of Zebedee, along with his brother James, was called from fishing to follow Jesus. These brothers were nicknamed "Sons of Thunder" for their fiery temperament—once asking to call down fire on a Samaritan village. Yet John became known as "the disciple whom Jesus loved." John was part of Jesus' inner circle, present at the Transfiguration, in Gethsemane, and at the cross where Jesus entrusted His mother to John's care. He outran Peter to the empty tomb and was first to believe when he saw the grave clothes. John's later ministry centered in Ephesus. He wrote the Gospel of John, three epistles, and Revelation while exiled on Patmos. His themes of love, light, truth, and eternal life reflect deep meditation on Christ. John was the only apostle to die a natural death, living until about 100 AD. His emphasis on love as the test of true Christianity came from one who had been transformed from a "son of thunder" into the apostle of love.
