Man and rebellion: the numbers Scripture uses as a warning

Thirteen's first appearance in Scripture sets its later reputation: "twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled" (Genesis 14:4). Ishmael was thirteen years old when circumcised into a covenant he would later stand outside of by his own rejection, not by the rite itself (Genesis 17:25). E. W. Bullinger takes Genesis 14:4 as the governing "first occurrence," a method he applies throughout the book, and from it reads later multiples of thirteen as marking rebellion, apostasy or corruption; he treats the number alongside eight, arguing that names connected with God's people tend toward multiples of eight while names connected with his enemies tend toward multiples of thirteen. This is Bullinger's system at its most speculative. Genesis 14:4 genuinely uses "the thirteenth year" at the moment of a revolt, but the leap to every later multiple of thirteen carrying that same weight is the tradition's own extrapolation, not a claim the text makes for itself.

Periodical cicadas wait thirteen years underground and then rise together in a single week — and their only kin wait seventeen. Both are prime numbers, and a prime cycle is the one arrangement a predator's shorter cycle can almost never meet (Williams & Simon, Annual Review of Entomology 40, 1995).
