The great penitential: 'A Psalm of David; when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bath-sheba.' Have mercy upon me according to thy lovingkindness; wash me thoroughly; 'against thee, thee only, have I sinned' (Romans 3:4). Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity. Purify me with hyssop; 'create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me… restore unto me the joy of thy salvation.' The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart he will not despise.
