Jehovah pauses for an answer: 'Shall he that cavilleth contend with the Almighty? he that argueth with God, let him answer it.' Job's first reply is short and right: 'Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer thee? I lay my hand upon my mouth' (40:4). But silence is not yet repentance, so the voice speaks a second time out of the whirlwind: 'Wilt thou even annul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be justified?' Deck thyself with excellency and dignity, then, and abase every proud one. Then the first monster: 'Behold now, behemoth, which I made as well as thee; he eateth grass as an ox': chief of the ways of God.
