Chapter summary

A poem standing alone in the book.

Read the rest, the context and the outline

A poem standing alone in the book. A search for where wisdom is quarried. Men know how to find everything else: 'there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold which they refine,' iron out of the earth and copper molten from the stone; the miner sets an end to darkness, overturns mountains by the roots, and his eye sees every precious thing. 'But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?' (28:12). The deep saith, It is not in me; the sea saith, It is not with me. God alone understands its way. 'Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding' (28:28).

Drawn from Jamieson, Fausset & Brown, Commentary Critical and Explanatory, Matthew Henry, Complete Commentary and John Wesley, Notes on the Old Testament.
