Abraham Cycle
Genesis 12–25:11
The call, covenant cut, covenant signed, covenant tested — the Abrahamic foundation.
From Genesis 12 the pace slows. One man, one family, one promise. The call of Abram (12:1–3) is the hinge of the entire book and arguably of the entire Old Testament: Get thee out of thy country… and I will make of thee a great nation… and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. The Abrahamic covenant comes in three movements: chapter 12 (call and promise), chapter 15 (covenant cut between divided animals — the smoking furnace and burning lamp), and chapter 17 (covenant sign of circumcision). Chapter 22 — the binding of Isaac — is the covenant tested and the typological apex of the cycle.
The NT will read this cycle as the foundational text on faith. Romans 4 stakes its argument on Abraham's faith reckoned as righteousness in Genesis 15:6 — before circumcision (4:10), before the law (4:13). Galatians 3 stakes the gospel itself on the seed-promise to Abraham (Gal 3:16). Hebrews 11 quotes Genesis 22 to ground its theology of resurrection-faith.
Key movements
12:1–9 — The call
Get thee out. The first sevenfold promise. Abraham's age (75) and obedience.
15 — Covenant cut
Faith reckoned for righteousness (15:6). The smoking furnace and burning lamp pass between the pieces.
17 — Covenant sign
Name change to Abraham. Circumcision as covenant sign and seal. Sarah named.
22 — Covenant tested
Take now thy son, thine only son. Mount Moriah. The substituted ram. Jehovah-jireh. The typological apex of the cycle.
Key verses

Christ in this section
Christ is the seed promised to Abraham (Gal 3:16) and the substituted Lamb of Mount Moriah (Gen 22). Both are typological: the cycle anticipates Calvary at every covenant moment.
