1. Matthew 4:21

   Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. Jesus called them,

2. Matthew 20:20

   Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and knelt down to make a request of Him.

   “Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children,.... Whose name was Salome, as may be concluded from Mat 27:56 compared with Mar 15:”

   “See also Mar 10:35-45. Mat 20:20 Then came to him give mother of Zebedee’s children ... - This was probably Salome, Mar 15:40; Mar 16:1. With her sons - The names of these sons were James and John, Mar 10:35 Mark says they came and made the request. That is, they made it, as appears from Matthew, through the medium of their mother; they requested her to ask it for them. It is not improbable that she was an ambitious woman, and was desirous to see her sons honored. Worshipping him - Showing him respect; respectfully saluting him.”

3. Matthew 27:56

   Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

   “Among which was Mary Magdalene--(See on Lu 8:2). and Mary the mother of James and Joses--the wife of Cleophas, or rather Clopas, and sister of the Virgin (Joh 19:25). See on Mt 13:55,56. and the mother of Zebedee's children--that is, Salome: compare Mr 15:40.”

   “(adv. Helvid.) 'See,' says Helvidius, 'Jacob and Joseph are the sons of Mary the Lord's mother, whom the Jews call the brethren of Christ. (Mark 6:3.) He is also called James the less, to distinguish him from James the greater, who was the son of Zebedee.' And he urges that 'it were impious to suppose that His mother Mary would be absent, when the other women were there; or that we should have to invent some other third unknown person of the name of Mary, and that too when John's Gospel witnesses that His mother was present.' O blind folly!”

4. Mark 1:20

   Immediately Jesus called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.

   “This passage is singularly full of matter. It is a striking instance of that brevity of style, which is the peculiar characteristic of Mark's Gospel. The baptism of our Lord, His temptation in the wilderness, the commencement of his preaching, and the calling of His first disciples are related here in eleven verses. Let us notice, in the first place, the voice from heaven which was heard at our Lord's baptism. We read, ‘There came a voice from heaven, saying, You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’ That voice was the voice of God the Father.”

   “There must have been something divinely compelling in the face of the Savior. Otherwise they would not have acted so irrationally as to follow a man whom they had never seen before. Does one leave a father to follow a man in whom he sees nothing more than he sees in his father? They left their father of the flesh to follow the Father of the spirit. They did not leave a father; they found a Father. What is the point of this digression?”
