The book states its purpose (to know wisdom and instruction) and its keystone: 'The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction' (1:7). A father warns his son against the enticement of sinners ('if sinners entice thee, consent thou not'), and Wisdom herself cries in the streets: because they refused her call, they shall eat of the fruit of their own way: 'but whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely.'
