The Prophecy Timeline

Jehu's coup (c. 841 BC) systematically eliminated Ahab's descendants. 2 Kings 9:30-37 records Jezebel's death at Jezreel: thrown from a window, trampled by horses, and her body eaten by dogs (only her skull, hands, and feet remained). 2 Kings 10 records Jehu killing all 70 of Ahab's sons. The line of Omri-Ahab was completely extinguished, fulfilling Elijah's prophecy with the specific Jezreel-dog-detail precisely matching.

Josiah was born c. 648 BC, crowned king of Judah in 640 BC, and in 622 BC—nearly 310 years after the prophecy—executed his famous religious reforms. 2 Kings 23:15-20 describes Josiah at Bethel specifically: 'Moreover the altar that was at Bethel, and the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat... both that altar and the high place he brake down, and burned the high place, and stamped it small to powder.' 2 Kings 23:16 specifically records that Josiah burned human bones on the altar, exactly fulfilling 1 Kings 13:2. This is one of Scripture's most specific predictive prophecies with a named future individual.

King Josiah (640-609 BC) fulfilled this prophecy made about 300 years earlier (1 Kings 13, c. 930 BC). He destroyed the Bethel altar and burned priests' bones on it (2 Kings 23:15-16).

This is one of the few prophecies naming a person by name before their birth.

Similar to the Cyrus prophecy in Isaiah, this names a future king by name centuries in advance.

Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon in 539 BC and issued his famous decree in 538 BC releasing the Jewish exiles and authorizing the rebuilding of the Temple (Ezra 1:1-4; 2 Chronicles 36:22-23). The Cyrus Cylinder (discovered 1879) confirms his general policy of returning exiled peoples to their homelands. Josephus (Antiquities 11.1.2) records the tradition that Cyrus saw Isaiah's prophecy naming him and was moved to fulfill it.

Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon in 539 BC and issued the decree allowing Jews to return and rebuild Jerusalem and the temple (Ezra 1:1-4).

Isaiah prophesied around 700 BC. Cyrus was born around 600 BC and conquered Babylon in 539 BC.

Critical scholars often date Isaiah 40-66 later to avoid this prediction. However, the Dead Sea Scrolls contain the full Isaiah scroll with no break.

Hezekiah's illness occurred around 701 BC during Sennacherib's invasion. He died 15 years later, in approximately 686 BC, exactly as prophesied. The Deuteronomic history confirms this timeline. Additionally, the sign of the shadow moving backward on Ahaz's sundial (Isaiah 38:7-8) is presented as supernatural confirmation. Manasseh, Hezekiah's son and successor, was born during these additional 15 years, making his birth and subsequent 55-year reign a direct consequence of the extension.

God's word to Jehu was that his sons would sit on Israel's throne to the fourth generation (2 Kings 10:30). Counting the sons after him: Jehoahaz first, Joash second, Jeroboam II third, Zechariah fourth. Zechariah reigned six months and was assassinated in public by Shallum (2 Kings 15:8-10), and the historian marks the moment himself — "This was the word of the LORD which he spake unto Jehu... And so it came to pass" (2 Kings 15:12). Four generations on the throne, then the dynasty ends. Keil & Delitzsch and Jamieson, Fausset & Brown both read Zechariah's six months as the point at which the word was discharged.
