Testing and judgment: seasons of trial
Nine gathers Paul's list of the Spirit's fruit, love, joy, peace and the rest, exactly nine named qualities (Galatians 5:22-23), and, in the same letters, a list of the Spirit's gifts that also runs to nine (1 Corinthians 12:8-10). Jesus, as Son of Man, is given the office of judgment (John 5:27), and Haggai's oracle piles up, by Bullinger's own count, nine distinct judgments on the land and its labor in a single passage (Haggai 1:5-11). E. W. Bullinger reads nine as the number of finality or judgment, the last of the single digits, and sets it beside six through the arithmetic that its digits sum to it (3 times 3). The Spirit's ninefold fruit and gifts are the plainest anchors in the text itself; the wider "judgment" label rests on Bullinger's own counting and arithmetic rather than a rule Scripture asserts.
The mathematics
- 9 = 3², and the last of the single digits.
- Every multiple of nine has digits that themselves add to a multiple of nine — the old bookkeeper's check called casting out nines. 52,843 × 9 = 475,587; 4+7+5+5+8+7 = 36; 3+6 = 9.
- Nine cubes are always enough: every whole number is the sum of at most nine cubes, and 23 is the number that actually needs all nine.

The same number, in what He made
The 'nine months' of pregnancy is the same fact as the forty weeks, rounded: 40 × 7 = 280 days, and 280 days is 9.2 calendar months (ACOG Committee Opinion No. 700, 2017).
