The number 27

Proclamation of the Gospel, preaching

Bullinger's note on twenty-seven is brief: Number in Scripture (ch. "Twenty-seven") reads it as three cubed, 3x3x3, intensifying the divine completeness he assigns to three, with no scriptural illustration given. Separate from Bullinger, and independently verifiable, the New Testament itself contains twenty-seven books, from Matthew through Revelation, a real count rather than a gematria construction. That fact plausibly underlies the popular "proclamation of the Gospel, preaching" label, since the twenty-seven New Testament books are themselves the church's record of gospel proclamation, but the label is an inference from the count, not a claim Bullinger or the text makes about the number twenty-seven directly. Present the 3-cubed arithmetic and the 27-book count as the honest anchors; hold "preaching" as a reasonable but derived association.

The mathematics

  1. 27 = 3³.
  2. The only number equal to three times the sum of its digits: 2 + 7 = 9, and 3 × 9 = 27. Provable, not merely unbeaten — 10a + b = 3(a + b) forces 7a = 2b.
  3. Twenty-seven is the famous hard case of the Collatz conjecture: start there, halve the evens and treble-plus-one the odds, and the chain climbs all the way to 9,232 and takes 111 steps to fall to one — far longer than any smaller start.

The same number, in what He made

The human hand is built of twenty-seven bones — eight in the wrist, five in the palm, fourteen in the fingers and the thumb (NCBI Bookshelf, Anatomy of the Hand). Three cubed, in the instrument that writes, works and blesses.

Sources are named in the line itself. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
