The number 39

Disease, affliction, punishment

Thirty-nine has one clear, verifiable anchor: the law capped flogging at forty stripes so the punished man would not be degraded beyond measure (Deuteronomy 25:3), and later Jewish practice, guarding against ever exceeding that ceiling by miscount, stopped one short at thirty-nine, the 'forty stripes save one' Paul says he received five times (2 Corinthians 11:24). Bullinger's Number in Scripture has no chapter on thirty-nine; this is a real legal and historical pattern, not folk numerology. The label 'disease, affliction, punishment' (Ed F. Vallowe, Biblical Mathematics, 1998) fits the punishment sense directly through the flogging anchor; scripture does not otherwise attach the number to disease, so that part of the label rests on broader association rather than a textual occurrence.

The mathematics

  1. 39 = 3 × 13.
  2. The smallest number that takes three steps of multiplying its own digits to reach a single digit: 39 → 27 → 14 → 4. (Ten takes one step, twenty-five takes two, thirty-nine takes three, seventy-seven takes four.)
  3. 39 = 3 + 5 + 7 + 11 + 13, the sum of five consecutive primes.
