Thirty is scripture's number of a man entering his calling: Joseph stood before Pharaoh at thirty (Genesis 41:46), David began to reign at thirty (2 Samuel 5:4), the Levites entered tabernacle service at thirty (Numbers 4:3), and Jesus began his ministry 'about thirty years of age' (Luke 3:23). The same number marks a price and a betrayal: thirty shekels of silver, the price set for a servant gored by an ox (Exodus 21:32), and centuries later the price paid for Jesus (Zechariah 11:12; Matthew 26:15). Bullinger's Number in Scripture treats thirty briefly as 3 x 10, 'the perfection of Divine order, marking the right moment.' The label 'maturity, dedication for ministry, blood of Christ' (Vallowe, Biblical Mathematics) draws on this real pattern of thirty as an age of entering service, though the phrase is later tradition, not the text's own definition.
The mathematics
- 30 = 2 × 3 × 5 — the product of the first three primes, and the smallest number built from three different ones.
- Thirty is the largest number with a remarkable property: every smaller number that shares no factor with it is prime. The complete list of numbers that do this is 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 18, 24, 30 — and then it stops forever.
- 30 = 1² + 2² + 3² + 4², the fourth square pyramidal number.
