The number 33
Promise, divine promise fulfilled
Bullinger's Number in Scripture has no chapter on thirty-three. Its clearest scriptural occurrence is a family count: Leah's line through Jacob numbered thirty-three sons and daughters in all (Genesis 46:15). The number is also popularly tied to the traditional age of Jesus at his death, a figure reached by combining Luke's 'about thirty' at the start of his ministry (Luke 3:23) with the roughly three-year span implied by John's Gospel; scripture never states Jesus's age at the crucifixion directly. The label 'promise, divine promise fulfilled' traces to Ed F. Vallowe's Biblical Mathematics (1998) and rests on neither occurrence. Present it to readers as tradition, not as the text's own claim.
The mathematics
- 33 = 3 × 11.
- The largest number that cannot be written as a sum of different triangular numbers. The complete list is 2, 5, 8, 12, 23, 33 — and then never again.
- Thirty-three was the last number below a hundred to be written as a sum of three cubes. Andrew Booker found it in 2019, and the numbers involved are sixteen digits long: 8,866,128,975,287,528³ + (−8,778,405,442,862,239)³ + (−2,736,111,468,807,040)³ = 33. Some small numbers keep their secrets for a very long time.

Sources are named in the line itself. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
